Nolan had a small concert at school last week for the 5th Grade Strings. He did a great job. He is also in a Fiddle Club after school. He is playing Shortnin’ Bread in the picture. He takes it very seriously. It’s really neat watching him grow up and express himself in different ways like this.
Happy Halloween! I don’t even have any pictures to share. My transition to being a working mom has not been an easy one. I love what I’m doing, but I miss a lot of what I used to do…including keeping up with this blog. I thought I’d do a quick update. The kids are doing great in school. We have teacher conferences this week. Nolan has started basketball. Thomas and Nolan are doing a tennis clinic Friday nights. Cub Scouts are in full swing (Chris is entering popcorn orders as I write).
The kids are growing up so fast before my eyes. Trick or treating tonight made me wonder how much longer we’ll all go out together like this anymore. Despite how busy we get, it feels so good to stop and remember how precious these moments are how blessed!
We had Nolan’s 5th grade orientation tonight…his last year in elementary school! He seems to be pretty happy with it so far. His teacher is very organized and dynamic. There seems to be a lot more responsibility on the student to get them ready for middle school. I think Nolan would be ready to go tomorrow if he could. He is still going to do chorus and violin. There is a fiddle club after school that we wants to do too. There seems to be a lot more writing this year which will be really good for him too. I’m curious if he will stay in the advanced math class or not. Outside of school, Nolan is loving fall ball. He won his first game last weekend 19 to 6 against Westland Hills, a team in Albany. He is getting better at sliding. He made 2 runs and hit a triple that game. Cub Scouts starts next week, so get ready for us to sell popcorn to you! And religion classes start next week too.
Thomas’s 2nd grade orientation was last night. He has the same teacher as last year because he “looped”. So there aren’t a lot of surprises which is good for Thomas. Other than complaining a little about all the rules in second grade (because he can’t make them!
, Thomas seems pretty happy too. He signed up for soccer but it is not going well, so I think we quitting. He is excited about trying bowling instead. The town has a program that picks kids up after school and takes them to a bowling alley to play, so parents just have to pick them up at 4:30pm. I think this might work well for Thomas because he won’t have an audience, which scares him. He has also become pretty proficient in chess, so we might pursue something with that. I think Thomas is just not going to be a sports kid, but who knows. He is lovingly unpredictable. He is also continuing with Cub Scouts.
We have been adjusting to life with 2 parents working…dinners have been less exciting and there are a few more dust bunnies flying around the house. But so far, taking one day at a time and not sweating the small stuff seems to be working out for us. This weekend, we will be selling popcorn and playing another baseball game. I’m hoping we can get to the apple orchard too. We’re due for some unscheduled family time.
